Passionate about data
Founded in 2006, Master Data Management has nearly 20 years of experience in enabling large and mid-sized African organisations to unlock value by improving data integrity.
Our passion for data integrity dates back to the late 1990s, when our founder, Gary Allemann, was a member of the team delivering Siebel CRM solutions to the South African market.
"Organisations were spending millions for a single view of their customer, but poor data quality meant that they often ended up with just another messy data silo.
I felt that there had to be a better way to deal with bad data so that organisations could get the value that they were paying for.
Out of that kernel, Master Data Management was born."
Gary Allemann, Director and Founder, Master Data Management (Pty) Ltd

Business Driven
Master Data Management takes a holistic, business-driven approach to data. This means prioritizing the use of data to achieve business objectives. It involves developing a strategy that aligns data management activities with the overall goals of the organization. This approach recognizes that data is useless on its own and that companies need an effective strategy, governance, and data management model to leverage all forms of data for practical and efficient use across supply chains, employee networks, customer and partner ecosystems, and much more.
Here are some key elements of our business-first approach to data management:
- Prioritizing business objectives: Our business-first approach to data management involves identifying the specific types of data a company will need and use and establishing procedures to govern the acquisition, collection, and handling of that data. The strategy should focus on the three to five most critical opportunities for the company's data and build from there.
- Developing a data management strategy: At Master Data Management, we help our clients establish effective data management strategies that enable them to overcome data management challenges and achieve their goals. With our data management strategy in place, businesses can proactively prevent common data-related obstacles. These may include issues with data compatibility, duplication or omission stemming from undocumented or inconsistently documented data sources, or data siloes that unnecessarily duplicate efforts and incur unnecessary expenses. Furthermore, data-related activities that consume valuable time and resources without contributing to overall business objectives can be eliminated.
- Leveraging modern data management systems: In today's business landscape, data plays a critical role, making a robust data management capability essential for all companies, irrespective of their size or industry. An effective data management system guarantees secure, accurate, and accessible data, empowering each department, manager, and employee to comprehend their specific role in driving company success. To ensure reliable data can be found when needed, modern data management software must overcome various challenges, including advanced data security, scalability, improved data access, automated backups and disaster recovery, cost savings, and more. Our partners understand the challenges faced by enterprise customers, providing future-proof solutions that allow you to focus on your core business with confidence in your data.
- Providing the knowledge and skills for data management: Sometimes the biggest challenge in using data effectively is that the organization's data owners are not data experts. A critical part of a data management strategy is to provide the knowledge and skills the team needs to manage, analyze and understand the data.
Taking a business-centric approach to data management involves recognising the value of data in a business's operations and functions, and developing a strategy that prioritises the use of data to achieve business objectives. It entails leveraging modern data management systems, providing the necessary knowledge and skills for data management, and developing a data management strategy that aligns data management activities with the overall objectives of the organisation.
Delivering trusted data for both operational use and analytics.
Poor data integrity impacts every business process - adding hidden costs and frustrations that impact every business opportunity. A commonly accepted rule of thumb, known as the 1:10:100 rule, is that for every rand spent on ensuring data integrity upfront, it costs R10 to fix data problems after the event.
However, if issues are left unresolved then the hidden costs due to the ripple effect can be 100s of times higher than the cost of doing things properly the first time. Typically, the same issues repeat themselves, leading to a cycle of duplicated effort and frustration.
The challenge, in many cases, is that these costs and frustrations are never formally identified as data integrity issues - meaning that fixes are often tactical in nature, are hidden in project budgets, and are not measured.
Our approach leverages lean principles to replace these hidden, wasteful processes with sustainable and efficient alternatives.
Of course, each business has its own priorities and challenges. We work with business and IT stakeholders to assess your unique business priorities and identify the potential data risks and opportunities. This allows us to build targeted business cases that are directly relevant to your business and circumstances.
Together, we can agree on a pragmatic and actionable data integrity roadmap to ensure that your goals are achieved.
Partnering with international experts
Trusted data is our focus and our passion. Over time we have built partnerships with similarly focussed boutique data management vendors that enable our delivery, and that solve specific problems that have typically not been addressed in most enterprises.
Our partners share our passion for data integrity and are trusted by large enterprises around the world. We leverage this international expertise but adapt to local, African conditions.
The reality is that African data presents many challenges that simply do not occur in most other geographies, not least the reality that in many cases we are dealing with multiple languages and cultural impacts.
Our technology partners provide technology that, in most cases, can be relatively easily adopted and integrated into enterprise landscapes, with minimal support from IT.
This business-centric approach to technology again fits our philosophy, helping us to drive engagement and deliver value quickly. Where relevant, we have built specific, South African capabilities into these products to accelerate project delivery.
Our consulting and training partners bring product-independent training and certification to build data management skills and data literacy, along with strategies to help you build your data culture.
